The United Kingdom is an important Georgia trading partner, ranking fifth among the state’s export markets last year, with year-end export totals increasing 11 percent over 2007.

Mike Harling, who manages the Georgia office near London, told GlobalAtlanta that despite worsening economic forecasts, Georgia companies may still find opportunities for information technology, advanced manufacturing, creative industries, financial services, insurance and life sciences products in the U.K.

Mr. Harling said that medical technology, software and food and beverage products have opportunities in the Republic of Ireland, especially because companies are increasingly trading between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

He said that in spite of political divisions, he sees a “whole island economy” slowly emerging, providing broader opportunities for Georgia firms that already have strong connections to both Dublin in the south and Belfast in the north.

Mr. Harling, who speaks English, French and German, became the Georgia office director for the U.K. after 25 years of investment promotion and international sales experience in Europe.
