Atlanta-based package delivery and logistics giant United Parcel Service Inc. has opened a new $30 million distribution center at Calgary International Airport in the Canadian province of Alberta.

The 150,000-square-foot facility houses 157 trucks to make deliveries in the Calgary area.  It doubles the hub's package processing capability to deal with rapidly growing business there. Shipment volumes have increased 60 percent since 2003, according to a UPS news release.

Executives said the new facility will help Calgary exporters easily reach China and India, both of which have an emerging middle-class markets for consumer goods.

"The rise of middle classes in China and India offers great potential to businesses in the Calgary area," said Mike Tierney, president of UPS Canada. "And this new facility will provide our customers with access to those markets in a more convenient and reliable fashion than ever before."

Air and ground packages are sorted at the hub, which employs 400 people in a logistics park next to the airport.
